Ahh Spring, when warmth and abundant color return to us! Landscapes will be our main source of inspiration, but we’ll also paint a few floral studies to mix it up. As usual, we’re not going to worry about making masterpieces. I will introduce concepts and give demos at the beginning of each class to encourage a freer way of painting. Then, everyone will paint, play, and ask questions. Open to students of all levels; some drawing experience is helpful but not required.

  • Watercolor with Sharon Schmiedel Class Supply List
  • Drawing Materials: Please have a 6B pencil, kneaded eraser, Black fine line waterproof marker (a sharpie is fine). I will also be using Derwent Inktense Pencils (these are like watercolor pencils but more intense). If you have watercolor pencils any brand you can use them instead, if you don’t have any, a set of 12 Inktense is ideal, they also sell them individually you could just get a couple, some favs are: leaf green, peacock blue, tangerine, fuchsia
  • Watercolor Paint: If you have tubes of watercolor and a palette any brand use them. A best buy is Winsor Newton student grade known as “Cotman” they are far above the quality of JobLot watercolors. They have 2 sizes 8ml all colors $2.77 a tube and 21 ml at $5.86 a tube, Ideally get the 21ml size for colors 1-4, and to spend less get the rest in small tubes. These prices at dickblick.com and jerrysartarama.com. they often cost more on amazon. Note: Winsor Newton is only brand to use for Raw Sienna, its an earthy yellow, in all other brands its brown. Quinacrodone Gold any brand possible substitution.
  • Colors in my palette:
  • 1. Lemon Yellow hue 6. Quinacridone magenta 11. Black
  • 2. Raw Sienna (Winsor Newton brand only) 7. Burnt Umber 12.Viridian
  • 3. Cerulean Blue 8. Sap Green
  • 4. French Ultramarine or Ultramarine blue 9. Alizarin Crimson
  • 5. Cadmium Red 10. Burnt sienna
  • Gouache paint: a tube of white (this is much more opaque than watercolor white, I use Winsor Newton or M.Grahams, but any brand will do. I use for snow scenes and small corrections.
  • Watercolor Paper: Pad of 9x12” Canson XL spiral bound Mixed Media paper is what I will be using, usually Walmart has this brand as do most art stores. Do NOT buy paper at Job Lot it is awful. If you have watercolor paper you can use that instead. Page 2 lists heavier weight options.
  • Watercolor brushes: Synthetic sables are cheaper and fine. You will need one good quality Round Medium brush size #12. Princeton Neptune is a good inexpensive brand. Escoda synthetic sables are excellent and reasonable. The other larger brush I will be using and highly recommend is a Princeton Neptune Quill #6 it is large round about $20, optional be sure you like watercolor before buying. If you have a 1” flat brush you can use that instead.
  • Palette: Link is to one I use, any palette will do that has 12+ wells and a cover

  • Other supplies: Cup for water, masking tape, paper towels, small spray bottle, toothbrush
  • You do NOT need to buy any of the supplies listed below
  • Some of My Favorite Supplies:
  • You do NOT need to buy any of the supplies listed below, but people often want to know what brands of paint I use and other supplies. Plus some of my favorites like Inktense pencils and a posca marker to highlight lost whites. If an item appears on both pages then it is recommended for class.
  • Watercolor Paints
  • I recommend Winsor Newton watercolors if you want to be able to match the colors I mix during demos. There are 2 levels of quality. The “Professional” are the most lightfast and all real pigments, few synthetic dyes. This is what I use, they cost more but are worth it. Get 14 ml tubes, prices range from $12 - $20 a tube for the colors I’m listing. Remember its a present so treat yourself, if you’ve been painting awhile and love watercolor. A best buy is Winsor Newton student grade known as “Cotman” they are far above the quality of JobLot watercolors. They have 2 sizes 8ml all colors $2.77 a tube and 21 ml at $5.86 a tube, Ideally get the 21ml size for colors 1-4, or if want to spend less get colors in bold in large tubes and rest small tubes. These prices at dickblick.com and jerrysartarama.com. they often cost more on amazon.
  • Colors: See list on page 1
  • •Derwent Inktense pencils set of 12. best price dickblick.com at $21.53, These are the watercolor pencils I use that have a lot of pigment and are bright when you use them with water.
  • •Generals Sketch & Wash #588: Sketch and wash pencil
  • •Posca acrylic marker: white size 1.8-2.5mm or 0.9-1.3m
  • •Sailor Fude de Mannen - Stroke style calligraphy fountain pen - bamboo green - nib angle 55 degrees, only available on amazon. This is fountain pen that draws both think n thin lines depending on how you angle the pen, one of my favorites
  • Paper
  • 9”x12” Blick Premier Watercolor block, hot press 140 lb $17.50. This is what I’m currently using and like and is $10 less than Arches, available online at dickblick.com
  • 9”x12” Arches 140lb cold or hot press watercolor block $27.13. Be sure to ask for block, not pad, block is 20 sheets bound on all 4 sides so drys flat. At 140 lb you can paint on other side too.
  • Sketchbooks: good to experiment with a couple different sizes and papers. I’m finding I really like Stillman and Birn the Zeta series (smooth texture and heavy weight) and Alpha Series (light texture mid weight). Soft cover 5.5”x8.5” or 8”x10”
