This watercolor class will focus on the principles of controlled realism. Each class will begin with a short demonstration of the subject matter for the day. All levels of experience are welcome!

Each student will receive individual attention and can work at his or her own pace. Please bring drawings and/or photographs of the subject you wish to paint.

  • Please come to class with your drawing completed on the watercolor paper, so that we can start right into painting. If you need help with the drawing, the instructor will be pleased to help you.
  • Materials List:
  • Please choose one of the following three paper options:
  • - 3 full sheets of watercolor paper (22 x 30 is a full sheet/any brand of paper is okay)
  • - 140 lb or 300 lb cold pressed paper
  • - A watercolor block (10 x 12, 12 x 16, or bigger)
  • - One covered plastic palette
  • - 2 round brushes (#4, #6 or #10)
  • - 2 flat brushes ( ½ , ¾ or 1)
  • - One plastic container or small coffee can for water
  • - Watercolors (Brand is your choice, and you will add colors as you go along. If you can’t find them all, that is okay)
  • o Prussian Blue
  • o Thalo or Phthalo Blue
  • o Cerulean Blue
  • o Cobalt Blue
  • o Indigo
  • o Payne’s Gray
  • o Cadmium Red
  • o Alizarin Crimson
  • o Permanent Rose

  • - One household sponge and a handful of Kleenex tissues

A Pittsburgh native, Doug attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Dough recently returned to Pittsburgh after pursuing a career as a package designer and freelance artist for almost forty years in northeastern Pennsylvania. He is a signature member and past president of the Pennsylvania En Plein Air Society. For the past fifteen years, he has taught watercolor classes and shared his love of the beauty of colors with students at several art leagues, both in group and individual formats. He has given both demonstrations and workshops that benefited both beginners as well as more advanced students. Doug has exhibited in many areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and Florida and is currently represented by Matthews Gallery in Bellevue and Bottlebrush Gallery in Harmony.
