Eggs in graphite and/or colored pencil

A fun way to learn and practice to interpret the pattern of light and shadow to see forms.

When aiming to create a realistic work on paper we must show height, depth, and width. Moving from point to line, into volume, a drawing acquires substance, mass, and the illusion of three-dimensionality. When rendering form, it is helpful to learn to recognize the framework of how light hits an object and creates shadows.

With eggs as the subject we will practice mapping out values to render their form on paper, using a single light source. Students can use either graphite or colored pencil.

**Please bring an egg (brown, white, a pastel colored heirloom egg, or quail egg) or egg shells to class.

For materials please refer to the materials list.

  • Workshops are confirmed one week prior to the start date so please register as soon as possible. There is a chance workshops will be canceled if there is low enrollment.

Visit www.theartguild.org/policies for our cancellation, Covid and class policies.
  • Graphite pencils:

Three (3) good quality graphite pencils – HB, 2H and 2B (e.g. Tombow Mono, Faber Castell 9000 or Staedtler) Colored pencils:

    1. A starter set of 12 good quality colored pencils (non-water-soluble!) When you start out, and don’t own any good quality pencils yet, I recommend to buy a tin of the Prismacolor Premier – Botanical Garden Set and supplement with the following Prismacolor Premier pencils: Black Grape, Black Cherry, Black Raspberry, Grayed Lavender, True Blue, Process Red, Nectar, Jade Green, Sand, Dark Green, Tuscan red

    AND

From the Faber Castell Polychromos range: Blue Indigo, Mauve, Delft Blue, Violet and the following greens: May Green, Earth Green Yellowish, Chromium Green Opaque, Chrome Oxide Green, Olive Green Yellowish

IF you wish to expand your colored pencil collection, see page 2 and 3 for suggested colors from either the Prismacolor or Faber Castell brand, or both. Note: some of the abovementioned pencils are included in the lists.

    2. Prismacolor Verithin pencils, minimum set of 12 (also available as open-stock). When purchasing individual pencils try to coordinate the colors with the hues in your basic set

    Blenders:

Colorless blender(s), see page 2 – I recommend to buy both, because each one gives a different result

    Sharpener:

Preferably a portable battery-operated sharpener with a spiral (a.k.a. helical) blade.

    Papers:

. A pad (15-sheets) of Legion Stonehenge, white, min. size 9” x 12” (bright green cover)

. A pad of Sketch paper, minimum size 9” x 12” (e.g. Strathmore 300 Series is an acid-free, lightweight [50lb.] good sketch paper for classroom experimentation, practice of techniques and quick studies)

    . A pad of Tracing paper, minimum size 9” x 12” (e.g. Strathmore 300 tracing)

    Erasers:

. Plastic/vinyl eraser (the white Faber Castell dust free eraser is a good one)

    . Kneaded eraser

    . Tombow Mono-Zero pen-style-eraser, round, 2.3 mm (optional)

    Miscellaneous:

    . Battery-operated portable light (recommended)

. Piece of Masonite or thick foam board (min. size 11” x 14”) to use as a drawing board

    . Magnifying glass

. Ruler, preferably a metal, cork-backed, that is at least 12” long

    . Westcott C-Thru plastic ruler 6”

. Color Wheel (preferably the Water Color Wheel)

    . Notebook (optional)

    . Dividers (optional)

    . Eraser shield (optional)

NOTE: When buying colored pencils, it is best to buy open stock, because large sets usually contain colors you will likely not use.

Instead of looking at the name only, look at the number of the pencil too. Sometimes manufacturers change the name, but the number will stay the same. If you already own good quality colored pencils other than the ones I recommend, bring these to class. Every brand has unique palettes and handling quality.

    OPTIONAL
