Pastels & Beyond with Silvia Maria Rey

Objectives: Objectives: Introduce participants to the use of pastels including hard, medium and soft pastels as well as pastel pencils and pan pastels. Different papers and blending methods will also be explored in order to understand the layering process and how different papers accept the medium. For the advanced students individualized instruction will be tailored to their learning needs.
Work session: Each class will follow these steps:
· The last 15 minutes of the class will be reserved for group critiques of the work produced during the class session. Students will be expected to be active participants in these critiques in order for them to refine their observational techniques and learn from each other.

- Discussion, demonstration and exploration of the various materials and techniques of pastels.
- Students will work on their own painting or may use reference photos provided by instructor.
- Individualized or small group instruction will be provided depending on the needs of the students.

- · Charcoal pencil or a stick of vine charcoal
- · Box of 12 Prismacolor NU Pastels - but would be better to get the box of 24 or 36 – whatever suits your budget best. (no oil pastels)
- · Any other soft pastels that you may have
- · Paper – A pad of 9 x12 UArt Sanded Pastel paper either 400 or 600 grit. Large sheets of sanded paper may also be used and cut down to size. (DO NOT purchase white paper – rather any toned background is recommended – either light gray or beige is best)
- · A drawing board with clips or tape to hold down paper. Drawing board should not
- be much larger than 11x 14. A piece of ½ inch foam board is also fine. If you plan to work on pieces larger than 11x14, please bring appropriate size drawing board.
- · Bulldog clips or artist tape (similar to masking tape, but with less tack)
- · A tabletop easel or something to prop up the drawing board
- · Baby wipes and paper towels
- · Kneaded eraser
- Recommended materials:
- · A pair of disposable (latex) gloves or finger cots
- · Dust mask
- · Old painting brushes (for underpainting and removing pastel)
- · 91% isopropyl alcohol for underpaintings
- · Makeup blending sponges
- · Sanding block or nail file

Silvia Maria Rey
Silvia María Rey is an educator, author, and award-winning artist from New York. Originally from Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States in 1961 with her parents and brother. She attended Cardinal Spellman HS where her first formal instruction in the fine arts cemented her love for the visual arts. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Herbert H. Lehman College and a Master of Science in Education from The City University of New York. She also holds advanced certificates in the fields of education focusing on the literacy needs of bilingual students and second language learners as well as in educational leadership. She has also been trained in family therapy and peer intervention. As a teacher and school administrator she made sure that the arts were prevalent in all of her schools. She has presented widely in both local and national conferences advocating for literacy and arts in schools.
The focus of her art work is on landscapes, still life, florals and figures - in pastel, pencil, watercolor, acrylic and oil. She also creates mixed media collages incorporating family legacy photographs. Her first published book is titled “In the Eyes of the Beholder: Literary Interpretations of an Artist’s Work.” She works on Long Island where she has been teaching at the State University of New York at Old Westbury since 2004. She has been a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America since 2017. She is a permanent associate artist at The Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport, and is an active member in several art organizations throughout the New York area. She has exhibited in both group and solo shows and her work is represented in several private collections.
She currently lives on Long Island along with her son, daughter-in-law and a menagerie of fur, finned and feathered babies.
