Step by Step Watercolor Painting with Kerri Shiekman

Jump into the colorful world of watercolor in this fun and beginner-friendly class! Whether you’ve never picked up a brush before or you’re looking to build confidence in your painting skills, this class is the perfect place to start.
With plenty of guidance and easy-to-follow steps, we’ll explore different watercolor techniques—like blending, layering, and brush control—while painting a variety of fun subjects, from dreamy landscapes to playful florals and simple still lifes. No experience? No problem! This class is all about learning in a relaxed, supportive space where mistakes are just happy accidents.
Whether you're continuing your journey or starting fresh, you’ll have a blast experimenting, creating, and discovering the magic of watercolor. Come paint with us!

Paint: Tubes OR Pots/Cakes of Watercolor Paints (warm and cool version of each primary color) Recommended: Winsor and Newton Cotman Watercolor Set of 10
Brushes: 3 rounds (between sizes 1 and 8), ½ inch flat brush
Paper: 140lb Cold Pressed (sheet or block) any size no smaller than 7x10 is OK
Recommended: Arches
Flat wooden board or drawing board (to tape paper down to)
Masking tape
Palette (to mix and/or store paint)
2 containers or jars for water
Cloth or Absorbent Paper Towel Roll
Optional: Helpful but not necessary- Masking Fluid, White Gouache
Kerri Shiekman
Kerri Shiekman is a Port Washington resident. She received a B.A. in Studio Art and a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Adelphi University, and has student taught at Weber Middle School in Port Washington. Kerri is an award winning artist and has shown her work across Long Island for nearly 20 years. She predominately works with watercolor but has a strong background in drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture. Kerri is looking forward to sharing her love of art with the students at The Art Guild.
