Workshop: Draw Like A Painter – Mastering Form, Tone, and Expression
2 day workshop (3 hours each day)
This workshop is designed to bridge the gap between drawing and painting, teaching artists how to think and see like a painter while using charcoal and or pencil. Participants will train their eyes to observe proportions, angles, and tonal relationships with precision, creating drawings that feel rich, expressive, and full of depth.
What You’ll Learn:
Drawing with Mass & Gesture: Approach drawing as a painter would, focusing on large shapes and tonal masses rather than outlines.
Value & Light: Use charcoal and pencil to build form through light and shadow, just as a painter layers color and tone.
Edge Control: Learn to manipulate edges—soft, hard, and lost—to create a sense of atmosphere and realism.
Mark-Making & Expression: Develop confidence in your strokes using varied pressure and directional marks to enhance texture and movement.
Students will work from reference images of objects, animals, and portrait, practicing techniques that translate seamlessly into painting. This workshop is ideal for artists looking to strengthen their drawing foundation while adopting a painterly mindset.
