Drawing with Colored Pencils with Silvia Maria Rey

Objectives: Objectives: Introduce participants to the use of colored pencils to produce high quality drawings. The basic materials, tools, and surfaces for drawing with colored pencils will be explored as well as how to apply colored pencils using a variety of techniques and approaches. How to use color theory in colored pencil drawings and how to create strong compositions in your drawings will also be studied.

- Discussion, demonstration and exploration of the various materials and techniques of colored pencils
- Students will complete drawings in a step-by step approach using reference photos and templates provided by instructor.
- Individualized or small group instruction will be provided depending on the needs of the students.
- The last 15 minutes of the class will be reserved for group critiques of the work produced during the class session. Students will be expected to be active participants in these critiques in order for them to refine their observational techniques and learn from each other.
- Class is confirmed 1 week prior to start and may be cancelled due to low enrollment

· Set of Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils - 48 pencils or larger
· 9”x12” Stonehenge Drawing or Strathmore 400 series Colored Pencil Paper pad
· Prismacolor blender pencil
· Small bottle of Gamsol (or odorless mineral spirits)
· Small #2 or #4 stiff bristle scrubber type brush
· Soft graphite drawing pencil (HB or 2B)
· Factis white eraser
· Kneaded eraser
· Saral transfer paper
· Drafting duster brush
· 12 or 18” ruler
· Drafting or Artists tape
· Smooth 12’x16’ (or similar size) surface drawing board
· Small Exacto knife (or similar razor like knife)
· Paper blending stumps (tortillions) in various sizes or Q-tips if you cannot find tortillions
· Small notebook for taking notes

Silvia Maria Rey
Silvia María Rey is an educator, author, and award-winning artist from New York. Originally from Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States in 1961 with her parents and brother. She attended Cardinal Spellman HS where her first formal instruction in the fine arts cemented her love for the visual arts. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Herbert H. Lehman College and a Master of Science in Education from The City University of New York. She also holds advanced certificates in the fields of education focusing on the literacy needs of bilingual students and second language learners as well as in educational leadership. She has also been trained in family therapy and peer intervention. As a teacher and school administrator she made sure that the arts were prevalent in all of her schools. She has presented widely in both local and national conferences advocating for literacy and arts in schools.
The focus of her art work is on landscapes, still life, florals and figures - in pastel, pencil, watercolor, acrylic and oil. She also creates mixed media collages incorporating family legacy photographs. Her first published book is titled “In the Eyes of the Beholder: Literary Interpretations of an Artist’s Work.” She works on Long Island where she has been teaching at the State University of New York at Old Westbury since 2004. She has been a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America since 2017. She is a permanent associate artist at The Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport, and is an active member in several art organizations throughout the New York area. She has exhibited in both group and solo shows and her work is represented in several private collections.
She currently lives on Long Island along with her son, daughter-in-law and a menagerie of fur, finned and feathered babies.
