Shading Class – All Levels Unlock the power of light and shadow to bring your drawings to life. In this all-level shading class, you’ll learn how to transform flat lines into fully rendered, three-dimensional forms using a range of traditional techniques. Whether you're a beginner looking to understand value and form, or a more experienced artist aiming to refine your tonal control, this class offers something for everyone.
Through guided exercises and hands-on demonstrations, students will explore:
- Value Scale & Tonal Range: Learn to create and control light, midtone, and dark values.
- Shading Techniques: Practice hatching, cross-hatching, blending and more.
- Understanding Light: Study how to observe and analyze light sources and cast shadows.
- Form Rendering: Apply shading to basic forms (spheres, cubes, cylinders) and progress to more complex subjects like still life, drapery, and portrait features.
- Surface & Texture: Explore how to depict various materials—smooth, rough, soft, or hard—through shading.
- Contrast & Composition: Use value to guide the viewer’s eye and create mood in a drawing.
Expect a mix of short technique drills and longer drawing studies. The class includes demonstrations, reference images, live feedback, and optional homework assignments to support your growth outside of class.
