Proportions Drawing Class – 5-Day Curriculum
Day 1: Introduction to Proportion & Basic Measuring Techniques
- What is proportion and why it matters in drawing
- Learning to “see” proportion
- Sight measuring techniques using a pencil
- Negative space and comparative measuring
- Simple still life drawing to apply proportion concepts
Day 2: Human Figure – The Basic Structure
- Ideal human proportions (e.g., 7.5–8 heads tall rule)
- Dividing the figure into proportional sections (head, torso, legs)
- Gesture drawing vs. structural drawing
- Practice: Drawing a simplified standing figure using reference
Day 3: The Head and Facial Proportions
- Basic head shape and proportion rules
- Placement of eyes, nose, mouth, and ears
- Front view and 3/4 view breakdown
- Practice: Drawing a head with correct proportions from reference
Day 4: Hands, Feet, and Common Proportion Challenges
- Basic proportions of hands and feet
- Common mistakes when drawing limbs and joints
- Practice: Focused studies on hands and feet using reference
Day 5: Full Figure Drawing & Proportion Review
- Putting it all together: Drawing a full figure with attention to proportion
- Practice: 1–2 longer figure drawings using reference photos
- Individual feedback and proportion correction tips

Kevin Yen
Kevin came to the United States from Taiwan to pursue his education in fine art and illustration. He studied painting, illustration, and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has over three decades of experience in the art industry which includes freelance work with Marvel and DC Comics. Kevin's art work is sought after by private collectors and some of his clients have been Pier One, St. Francis College, Nike, and Make-A-Wish.
