Let’s paint Folk Art - Gouache

Adult Classes | Available

Historically, Folk Art reflects local culture, history and tradition and can provide insight into a home, family or community’s identity. Oftentimes, simple household objects and scenes of daily working lives are depicted. We will follow these principles and create simple landscapes and still lifes and combine border-patterns to help tell the painting’s meaning.

Using our own homes and lives as reference, acryla gouache on our palettes and creative thinking, we will get Folksy.

      Paints
Acryl Gouache is what I will use. It is a lot like regular gouache except that once it dries, the paint is
permanent and you can paint over it. Mistakes can be fixed! And, I prefer it over regular acrylic because it
dries with a velvety, matte finish.

This link is for a starter set.
In addition, I suggest getting some of these other colors that I think round out the set:
Ash Blue, Prussian Blue, Leaf Green, Yellow Ochre, Olive, Pink Cosmos and an extra white.
      Individual Colors
Brushes. I always say, when in doubt, use a bigger brush. So bring big brushes! If you only bring one
brush, bring the quill. I paint entire paintings with this one brush.
I love this palette. Keeps my paints wet for days. I can leave and come back to it. If you use Acryl Gouache,
      I highly recommend this! Palette
Paper  Mixed Media  Get this or something similar. 11 x 14” minimum size.
Pens This is the best white gel pen - and I’ve tried many! White Gel Pen
      Pencils and/or markers for sketching
      Eraser

The Art Guild can supply sketch paper
And please bring supplies you love. Let’s share!

Paintbrush is in hand whenever Michelle is on the road, bus or train, or flying through the air.

You might find her sketching in a restaurant, park bench, baseball stadium and definitely at a picnic.

A graphic designer by trade and education, Michelle watched her mother paint in watercolor and learned old-school style: practice, practice, practice. Still studying today, Michelle takes a variety of painting classes to hone her craft. Her graphic design business now includes illustration and watercolor commissions of house and pet portraits, scenics, authors and illustrated maps.

Michelle has taught several classes at The Art Guild and recently led her first painting retreat in the Adirondacks.

Second annual retreat planned for August, 2026.

Michelle has also created a painting group called Suburban Sketchers! We Gather. Paint. And share.

Every Tuesday afternoon, rain or shine. Follow this link for more info: https://www.instagram.com/suburban_sketchers_li/
