Figure Drawing: College Portfolio Preparation

Kids Classes | Available

Figure drawing is one of the most important components of a strong college art portfolio. In this intensive class, students develop essential observational drawing skills while working from a live model and exploring proportion, gesture, anatomy, and composition.

Led by Lenore Hansen, former Director of Studio Practices at Huntington Fine Arts, this course provides focused instruction for students preparing portfolios for competitive college art programs. Through individualized guidance and critique, students strengthen their technical drawing ability while learning how to create portfolio pieces that demonstrate both skill and personal expression.

Emphasis is placed on careful observation, confident mark-making, and developing drawings that communicate structure, movement, and form. Students will produce a series of finished and exploratory works suitable for inclusion in a college application portfolio.

This class is ideal for high school students planning to apply to art schools or visual arts programs and looking to strengthen their foundational drawing skills under the guidance of an experienced portfolio instructor.

Hanson, Lenore
Lenore Hanson

Lenore Hansen brings more than 30 years of experience as Director of Studio Practices at Huntington Fine Arts, where she served as both an instructor and mentor in the highly respected College Preparatory Portfolio Program. Huntington Fine Arts has long been recognized for preparing students for competitive college art programs, and during her tenure Lenore guided countless young artists through every stage of the application process—from developing strong portfolios and photographing artwork to refining essays, writing slide descriptions, and evaluating college programs. Her students have been accepted into top college art departments across the country, many earning merit scholarships.

Lenore’s teaching emphasizes both strong technical foundations and the development of an authentic artistic voice. She believes that observational drawing is a critical skill for any serious art student and incorporates it as a core element of her instruction, much like a college foundation program. At the same time, she encourages students to experiment with a wide range of materials, scale, and processes so they can expand their creative thinking and discover their own visual language.

Drawing on her experience with materials, casting, installation, and construction, Lenore works closely with students to solve creative and technical challenges as they develop their work. Through individualized guidance and thoughtful critique, she helps students build portfolios that are not only technically strong but also conceptually meaningful—preparing them for the expectations of highly selective college art programs.
