Mastering Charcoal Drawing - Tools, Techniques & Expression

Adult Classes | Available

Discover the beauty and versatility of charcoal in this comprehensive drawing course designed for artists of all skill levels. Whether you're picking up charcoal for the first time or looking to refine your technique, this class will teach you how to confidently use one of the most expressive drawing mediums.

Students will explore the different types of charcoal, including vine, willow, compressed charcoal, charcoal pencils, and learn when and how to use each effectively. We'll also cover the essential tools that professional artists rely on, such as blending stumps, chamois, brushes, kneaded erasers, pen erasers, sharpening techniques, and fixatives.

Throughout the course, you'll develop a strong understanding of:

1) The characteristics and uses of different charcoal materials

2) Creating smooth gradients and rich, deep blacks

3) Building form through light, shadow, and value

4) Blending and edge control

5) Lifting highlights and correcting mistakes

6) Expressive mark-making and texture

7) Proper layering and finishing techniques

8) Preserving your artwork with fixatives

Through instructor demonstrations and guided exercises, students will practice techniques on a variety of subjects while learning to see and simplify values like a professional artist. By the end of the class, you'll have the confidence to choose the right materials, control your charcoal with precision, and create drawings with depth, atmosphere, and dramatic contrast.
