Observation, Not Imitation: Drawing Beyond the Reference

Adult Classes | Available

Many artists can copy a photograph, but the strongest artists learn to see, understand, and interpret their subject. In this class, students will develop the ability to draw with purpose rather than simply duplicating an image.

Through guided demonstrations and exercises, you’ll learn to analyze form, structure, light, shadow, proportion, perspective, and composition. Rather than relying on outlines or copying every detail, you’ll discover how to simplify complex subjects into understandable shapes and build drawings with greater confidence.

Working from photographs, still lifes, and live references, you’ll strengthen your observational skills and learn to make thoughtful artistic decisions that bring more interpretation and personal style into your work.

Topics include:

  • Training your eye to observe rather than copy
  • Understanding form, structure, and volume
  • Simplifying complex subjects into basic shapes
  • Light, shadow, and value relationships
  • Proportion and perspective
  • Composition and focal point
  • Developing personal interpretation and style
