This two day photography intensive is for anyone with basic photographic experience looking to gain more control over their lighting as it relates to environmental and studio portraiture.

Day one will cover portrait theory, reexamining the use of ambient light, and how modifiers, reflectors and positioning of your lights can bring more drama to your portraits.  A demonstration of various lighting scenarios will be presented with a volunteer model.  Everyone will get a chance to participate.

Day two will be a class shoot.  Students will work in groups of two or three and take turns photographing each other using the lighting equipment that they own in the Art Guild building and beautiful grounds as a location (depending on weather).  In terms of lighting gear, a simple single speed light will be sufficient though if you have additional equipment you want to bring, please do.  We will take time for you to download your images and choose a few to share with the class and critique.

  • PLEASE READ:
Thank you for registering for the portrait lighting workshop!  In preparation for the first class meeting please prepare some material that should be emailed to me advance of our first meeting.

    • Select 5 of your photographs that you feel reflect the best of your work.  If you’d care to send a brief description about the images, concerns that you have about where you are with your photography or any other commentary, please do. An email and reminder will be sent with directions of where this should be emailed, 1 week prior to the workshop
    • Select 3 ‘hero’ images of other photographers work that you greatly admire that have been inspirational or influential to you and label the file with the photographers name.
    • What lighting system are you using?  A single speed light for this class is more than sufficient.  Do you have a method to trigger your strobe if it is not attached to your camera [either with a remote trigger or a p/c cable]?
    • Please send a headshot of yourself.
    •

Camera [digital or film] that can shoot in manual mode with a hot shoe or a jack for a p/c cable.  A cell phone camera or a snap shot camera will not work for this particular class.

[SECOND CLASS ONLY] Your current lighting system. (The Art Guild does not own any lighting equipment but will have available several speed lights and modifiers to add to whatever students bring.)
