Animals Alla Prima!

Workshop | This program is completed

In this fun and informative two-day workshop, you’ll learn how to paint your animal friend using the alla prima method of oil painting. Alla prima paintings are typically completed in one session. Acrylic paints may be used as well instead of oils.

Painting from reference photos, you’ll simplify your subject into values and develop these from underpainting to final marks. You’ll learn to paint faster and looser, which will fast-track your skills and help build confidence as a painter.

We’ll start each day with a short demonstration where we’ll review materials and cover key concepts like value, color, edges and brushwork. There will be lots of time to paint, ask questions and get one-on-one feedback. You’ll leave this workshop with advice to inspire your practice and tips to help you incorporate painting into your regular routine.

Please plan to bring 2 to 3 reference photos. Tips on choosing good reference photos will be included with the materials list.

    • Paints - I like Vasari or Gamblin, but feel free to bring what brand you like

      Oil Colors:

Flake white or warm white (Gamblin makes a nice warm white)

      Cadmium Yellow Light

Yellow Ochre (Vasari’s is really nice)

Permanent Bright Red (Vasari) or Cad Red Light (Gamblin)

      Alizarin Crimson

      Ultramarine Blue

      Cad Green Light

      Viridian

      Transparent Earth Red

      Ivory Black

Extra - nice to have on hand, but not necessary

      Bice (Vasari)

      Raw Umber (Vasari)

      Genuine Naples Yellow Light (Vasari)

      Radiant Green (Gamblin)

Note: The less colors the better. Working with a limited palette allows for better color harmony and less overall decision making.

      Brushes & tools -

      flats and/or filberts #2 #4, #6, #8, #10, small to med. I mainly use Princeton synthetic flats.

Odorless paint thinner (OMS) such as Gamsol or Turpenoid. **If you are traveling by plane, The Art Guild can provide you with this.

Cold Press Linseed Oil (this can be optional, I don’t use very much when I’m painting)

      Palette

Panels (I use Ampersand Gessobord, but any painting panel (flat board) will work. Bring two to three panels so we can use one to experiment and two for paintings. I will demonstrate using 8 x 8” or 12 x 12”

      An assortment of sizes might include 8 x 8, 8x10, 9x12, 12 x 12, 11 x 14

Voje, Patty
Patty Voje

Patty Voje is an award-winning artist based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She has exhibited nationally and is the recipient of numerous accolades. Patty studied Fine Art at the University of Minnesota and at The Atelier of Minneapolis. She is proud to be affiliated with American Women Artists (Signature Member), Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society and Outdoor Painters of Minnesota.

A midwest girl born and raised, Patty grew up on a small hobby farm where she had the good fortune to include pigs, sheep and the occasional chicken as members of the family. Her love of animals still figure prominently in her art.

Patty is a figurative painter with most of her work being “alla prima” – completed in one sitting. This allows her paintings to remain loose and intuitive. Her command of bold color and expressive brushwork mark her work.

Patty travels extensively exhibiting in fine art shows throughout the nation, teaching workshops and participating in plein air events. An infectious teacher, she believes that sharing her process and technique is just as important as sharing her finished work.
