Finding Poems + Letting Them Come Through

Adult Multi-Week | Available

How are poems made? A poem is made from the mind (an idea), the body (the hands, the eyes, the mouth, the ears following sounds), and something else akin to the mystical, the visionary, the awe-inspired. This non-traditional workshop will use found poetry, erasure, collage, scraps, materials, and interesting forms and prompts to allow poems to come through us. Instead of beginning with an idea, we’ll use fun constraints to bend our usual ways of thinking about or starting poems. Our goal will be prolific: many new, surprising poem drafts to work with. Students will read poems and interviews with writers as they talk about their process, and share their own writing. This will not be a traditional workshop where participants will take work home to “critique.” Instead, we’ll practice listening, affirming, and helping each other see the world of possibilities inside us, and all around.

  • Please prepare to write both in and outside of class. Students can write by hand or use laptops/tablets. Please also prepare to read out loud and discuss works-in-progress with the group.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
This class does not meet on 4/25 for our yearly auction.
