Hand Building: Make Your Own Platter
Adult Intensive | Available
Learn how to hand build a ceramic platter. In this class, you'll explore different techniques to finish the surface of your work, using stencils and layering underglaze colors on the clay to create a dynamic surface design. We will combine slab pieces and coil work to create a one-of-a-kind platter. At the end of the class, you'll have a beautiful finished piece to debut at your next dinner party and the skills and inspiration to continue making more art. This class is designed for anyone with a working knowledge of the basic techniques of creating a hand-built piece.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
Please bring a towel and clay tools.
This class includes all clay needed. Students will pick up their finished pieces at a later date. This class does not include a clear glaze firing, only underglaze bisque friring.
Stephen Palmer
I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay. Through teaching, I hope to share and ignite the same passion and excitement in my students that I have for the ceramic form.
