Put a Lid On It: Wheel Throwing Jars

Adult Multi-Week | Available

Take your wheel throwing skills to the next level in this six-session class dedicated to creating beautiful and functional lidded jars. Designed for intermediate potters, this class covers the technical challenges of throwing cylindrical forms and crafting well-fitted lids. At the end of class, you'll leave with at least one fully designed, decorated, and glazed jar, perfect for practical use or display. Gain confidence with advanced skills such as measuring with calipers, trimming for precision, and balancing form with function. Open studio time is encouraged for additional practice. Whether you're looking to refine your techniques or explore new creative possibilities, this class is your chance to "put a lid on it" with flair!

  • This class is for intermediate students; prior wheel-throwing experience is required, including the ability to center clay confidently.
  • Clay and glazes will be provided.
  • Open studio time is highly recommended for additional practice.
  • Wear clothes suitable for working with clay and bring a notebook for sketching jar designs if desired.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. Wheel-throwing requires some hand, arm and back strength, and the ability to lift 25lbs of clay. VisArts has standing wheels and wheelchair accessible wheels available - please let us know in advance if you need one of these options so we can make sure your studio is equipped. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

Please bring a towel and clay tools.
