Slow-Stitched Embellishments

Explore several methods of hand-stitched embellishment for fabric, including embroidery, kantha, sashiko, boro, and visible mending. Reap the benefits of a meditative and calming approach to art-making with fabric. All class materials will be included, but we encourage you to bring in your own items to mend or embellish, too.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
Julia Pfaff
A recent receipt of a Professional Artist Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and with an undergraduate degree in art history and a MFA in textiles, Julia has been quilting her entire life. She is a studio artist and has successfully turned a family tradition into a contemporary art form. She teaches at both the community and college level. Julia’s hand dyed and printed quilts have been exhibited extensively and can be found in numerous national publications and collections. During class you can ask her about working in Egypt, Greece, and Jordan as an archaeological technical artist.
