The Big Picture: Creating a Collaborative Mural (this class is only offered twice a year)
Adult Multi-Week | Available
In an adventure into the world of collaborative mural making, this hands-on class brings participants together as a community to create a mural that tells a story of identity, memory, and shared vision. This class will guide you through the process of conceptualizing, designing, and painting a large-scale mural. You will learn how to collaborate with others, brainstorm ideas, and translate your vision into a cohesive artwork that reflects the collective voice of the group.
- No prior art experience needed—all skill levels are welcome. This class offers a unique opportunity to be part of a public collaborative work. This is an outside class and class days will be rescheduled if there is rain. Students of all abilities are encouraged to join. There will be a lot of standing at a wall; if a student has trouble standing for two hours, they need to bring personal accommodations as needed and the class can be tailored to such. Students must bring: sunscreen, water (teacher does bring a cooler), and sun protective headwear. Students purchase their own paint brushes and sharpies.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
This class does not meet on 4/20 due to our Easter.
Sam Skrimpz
I am a trans non-binary muralist and arts educator. I love working with community to make big art together, and especially with queer youth. The art I make in my practice is playful and mystical, and largely inspired by my upbringing in the gulf south, but is now shifting with my trans identity. I work mostly in acrylic paints, and recently collage and gouache, and am looking forward to exploring more mediums.
