Tintype Photography

Adult Intensive | FULL

Use one of the earliest forms of photography to create tintypes, which are direct positives printed on an aluminum sheet using large format cameras. Learn the basics of this 19th century process, including how to pour and sensitize collodion, properly expose and develop plates, and apply a protective varnish. Plan to walk away with two to three finished pieces.

  • All chemistry, media and cameras will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you have it. Please wear old clothing or bring aprons. Some materials can and will temporarily stain skin and permanently stain clothing. Gloves will be provided.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. This is a physically intensive, very hands-on workshop. The equipment is bulky, heavy, and a bit cumbersome to control. Some of the steps in the process require a steady hand as we work with a variety of photo chemistry. We also do a lot of moving/walking, going up and down stairs (although there is an elevator). Although there are opportunities to rest and take a break, a majority of the workshop is on your feet moving back and forth from your camera set-up outside to the darkroom. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
