What's Love Got to Do With It?

Adult Multi-Week | Available

This six-week personal essay class will walk you through the process of writing, revising, and submitting an essay to the New York Times' Modern Love essay column. Discussions of published essays from the column and writing advice from the editor Daniel Jones will create a foundation for writing your own Modern Love style essays. Prompts on topic selection, essay structure, style, tone, beginnings, endings, and scene will help you generate material. The final classes will be workshops designed to prepare you to revise and submit your completed essay for publication.

  • Students should be prepared to read and write outside of class. Please come to class with a copy of the reading and either a journal or a computer for in class writing.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. This class relies on computer and email access for sharing writing. Students without a personal computer can access computers outside of class at their local library or through studio access at VisArts. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
This class does not meet on 4/25 for our yearly auction.
