Wheel Throwing Refresher

Adult Multi-Week | Available

Brush up on the basics! We'll review wheel throwing techniques and skills. Create and complete work during class, with enough time to fire and glaze. This class is open to students who have previously taken wheel throwing classes. We will review and refresh our knowledge of wedging, centering, throwing, trimming and glazing. We will take a look at various tools and how they can assist in throwing. We will also pay special attention to glazing techniques, including cone firing temperatures and how to get an excellent glaze application.

  • All materials and equipment provided. This is an intermediate class, students should be able to center and throw.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. Wheel-throwing requires some hand, arm and back strength, and the ability to lift 25lbs of clay. VisArts has standing wheels and wheelchair accessible wheels available - please let us know in advance if you need one of these options so we can make sure your studio is equipped. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.

Please bring a towel and clay tools.
You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.

Nga Nguyen-Weaver

I have been working in clay since 1995 with an emphasis on functional ware. Clay is such a gratifying material for me. To manipulate a blob of dirt into something both beautiful and useful is why I create pottery. The forms and designs of my pieces are derived from observations in nature as well as careful considerations to the utility for which they are made. Although ever evolving, my aesthetic tendency bends towards simplicity. I hope that my work speaks to you as you hold it and use it and discover little quirks, nicks, finger prints... marks of the maker. I hope it brings you joy in your every-day rituals. http://www.woodlandheightsstudio.com
