Gauge Swatching for Accurate Sizing (Limited Offering) – New!
Adult Intensive | Available
Tired of your sweaters not fitting? Or have you been reluctant to start a fitted garment project because you aren't sure how to get a good result? Whether you are a knitter or a crocheter, this class will teach you to use gauge swatches to accurately size your fit-dependent knitting or crochet projects! We will learn to make, block, and measure gauge swatches accurately, adjust your work to match pattern instructions, and take simple body measurements for garments (students can use the instructor as a model). The class will include project planning and open work time, so please feel free to bring a project you are interested in planning using your new knowledge, or just any project you would like to work on in community! Skill level: knitters should be able to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off. Crocheters should be able to make a foundation chain, work single crochet, and cast off.
- If you have crochet hooks or needles in a variety of sizes appropriate for worsted weight yarn (knitting: sizes 3-9 or 3.25-5.5 mm, crochet: sizes D-I or 3.25-5.5 mm), please bring whatever sizes you have easily at hand! I will also provide a range of sizes. Please indicate when you sign up whether you are interested in working primarily in knitting or crochet.
- If you have a specific pattern/yarn you would like to work on, you are welcome to bring it to class and we will help you make the gauge swatches for that specific pattern! Otherwise, you will learn general ideas that you can apply to future projects.
- As a side note, while we will cover how to take some simple body measurements accurately, you will never need to measure or discuss your own body if you do not want to. All classroom activities can be demonstrated on the instructor, so if you plan to do fitted hand work for others, you can still learn these skills!
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Knitting/crochet requires moderate hand strength, repeated motions, and close vision. Majority of class can be taken seated.
