Made Myself: Therapeutic Clay Connections for Trans Folks – New!
Adult Multi-Week | Available
Made Myself is a four-week class focused on using clay as a therapeutic art medium to build connections with trans people of all ages. This class seeks to foster a space where trans people can come together and play with clay to unwind while sharing lived experiences. This course is trans-taught and trans-centered to ensure that this space can be focused on building authentic community connection and offer relief from everyday stress. As a student, you will spend two classes working with wet clay, then use the last two classes to glaze and decorate your pieces before the final glaze firing.
- This class is specifically for trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming people seeking to connect with other trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming people. This is a safe place to explore your artistic side while having a reprieve from the outside world.
Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.
Students should be aware that this is a class that is physically intensive, but that assistance can be provided. The most intensive part will be wedging the clay, though I would be happy to wedge clay in advance for anyone who needs it!
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
Please bring a towel and a set of basic clay tools if you have them.
You will receive 25 pounds of clay; additional clay is available for purchase.
On-site courses do not come with studio access outside of class time. Paid open studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
