Hand Building: Make a Garlic Roaster (Limited Offering) – New!

Adult Intensive | Registration opens 11/5/2025 9:00 AM EST

In this one-day workshop, you will learn how to create a slab-built garlic roaster from start to finish. We’ll begin the day with a guided demo and hands-on instruction in constructing this unique form, focusing on how darting can be used to shape and refine volume. In the afternoon, we’ll finish construction and move onto sculpting the garlic topper and creating the tray. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a completed piece and the skills—and hopefully the inspiration—to keep experimenting with altering shapes in your own work.

  • You should bring your own pottery tools, any underglazes you have, a ruler, and a cutting tool (fettling knife or X-ACTO blade) for cutting the clay.

This class includes all clay needed. Students will pick up their finished pieces at a later date. This class does not include a clear glaze firing, only underglaze bisque friring.
Please bring a towel and a set of basic clay tools if you have them.

Accessibility notes: Many artmaking processes require the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, fine motor skills/finger dexterity, repetitive motions, vision, and some amount of physical strength. VisArts values making classes accessible to everyone, and is always happy to work with students to make accommodations when possible. Please reach out to info@visarts.org with specific questions related to accessibility or accommodations.

Paid studio access is available through our Studio Access Program. Please visit visarts.org for more information.
Classes are confirmed one week prior to the start date. In order to help us confirm classes, please register as early as possible.
  • See special notes for materials notes.

I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay. Through teaching, I hope to share and ignite the same passion and excitement in my students that I have for the ceramic form. instagram @steve_palmer_ceramics https://www.facebook.com/Steve-Palmer-Ceramics-426802860805793
