Subverting the Story: Retelling Myths, Fairy Tales + Legends (Limited Offering) – New!

Adult Multi-Week | Registration opens 11/5/2025 9:00 AM EST

In this generative workshop, students of multiple creative writing genres will engage with and practice creating “retold tales”—rewriting myths, fairy tales, legends, classic stories, and other similar sources by adding new twists or using different points of view. We will consider questions about perspective, cultural and geographical location, power, and identity. Students will read short texts in class to explore the theme of retold tales. These will potentially include, but not be limited to, selections from Emma Donoghue's Kissing the Witch (1997); the short story collection Remapping Wonderland (2021); John Sciezca’s The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (1989); Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife (2000); the anthology Mondo Barbie (1993); and others. Students will create their own works that respond to “retold tales” prompts and stories/poems/media viewed in class.
