The course will cover basic pottery wheel throwing techniques where students will develop or continue to improve, their skills in centering, throwing and trimming pottery forms. Students will learn to make the two most common forms from which almost all pottery stems; a cylinder and a bowl. From there we will learn more advanced skills and how to embellish our pieces with carvings, handles, additions and or other accents.

  • 25 pounds of clay is included in the price of class. Glaze and firing are also included in the class fee. Additional clay can be purchased at the same fee if needed during the session.

    Students should purchase a beginning pottery kit. (Jerry’s did not have this available at the start of this years fall session)
    This should include the following: a small sponge, a needle tool, a large loop tool/trimming tool, a small loop tool/trimming tool, a wooden knife, a rubber or plastic rib, a wooden rib and a wire tool.

    Students should have a hand towel that they are not worried about getting dirty.
    Students should bring a small tool bag or box to store their pottery kit.
    Students can bring a plastic storage box with a lid. Clear is preferred so students can see inside. Specific size can range but for beginners, 16”x 7”x 14” (LxHxW)
    Optional tools- paint brushes for glazes and modeling tools.

Johnson is a ceramic artist living and creating in Bloomfield, CT. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Ceramics from the University of Hartford Art School. Her work has been shown in different places throughout the country such as the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT, the LUX Art Center in Nebraska, at the 18 Hands Gallery in Houston, TX, and the Lorton Arts Foundation in VA.
