Express yourself with paint, drawing, and collage with intuition as your guide. Have fun with new tools and techniques. We will paint to music, use prompts, make marks, make our own collage papers, collaborate, and more.  I believe everyone can create and this is a perfect class for creative self-discovery. Meet your inner artist. In this class I share techniques and strategies to enhance one's work. A student favorite is 5 ways to begin a painting and fun ways to pick your color palette. All exercises and techniques will sampled in an art journal which can be used as reference at end of class. I will guide you from paper, to paint, to canvas.  Great class to begin your painting journey or add to your body of work.  By the end of the class, you will have  two ready to hang pieces. Discover your creative potential and style.

No experience necessary.
A $10 material fee payable to the instructor will be collected at the first class.

    Apron, Smock or your painting clothes

    Art Journal Strathmore water color 400 series or Strathmore mixed media 500 series

    The Art Journal will hold ideas, techniques, exercises and mini paintings. A great reference to have at end of class

     

    2 canvases or canvas board 16x20 or 20x24

    18"x24" Strathmore 180 lb white mixed media pad or Canson XL Heavy Weight 140 lb white Watercolor Pad Students may want to split a pad

    Collage materials- we will paint our own in class

    Sketch paper/Drawing paper –copy paper works

     

    2 Water jars. Mason jars are perfect

    3 Acrylic Brushes- Small, Medium and Large will do

    Small- round for detail

    Medium- flat brush and or round brush

    Large -like hardware store paint brush1.5 to 2” wide

    Optional - a filbert, a mop, a larger flat

    Variety of foam brushes SML

    Brayer (optional)

    Scraping tool, old credit card, spackle knife,

    Palette knife

     

    Acrylic paint

    We are working with families of Red, Blue and Yellow, i.e. Ochre can represent your Yellow.


    4 warm colors - 

    Warm Color Stories
    Brown, gold, orange, peach, red (such as scarlet),rose pink, tan/beige, taupe, terra-cotta, yellow, diarylide yellow, lemon yellow hue, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium red light, opera rose, quinacridone magenta, burnt umber, yellow ochre and ultramarine (considered a warm blue.

    4 cool colors - 

    Cool Color Stories
    Blue, burgundy (a purple-based red), cyan, emerald, fuchsia, green, indigo, magenta (a red with blue undertones), mint green, purple, teal, eggplant, emerald, aqua, prussian blue, cerulean blue, alizarin crimson (considered a cool red), turquoise
    and cobalt.

    Titanium white, carbon black and Paynes gray, ochre, burnt sienna

    A few tubes of Acryla gouache (optional)

    Gesso (optional)

    Matte gel medium

    Palette for paint- paper palette pad, freezer paper, old dish, plastic lid, I use an enamel tray

     

    2 White gel pens #10

    Stabilo pencil white and black

    black markers, med point Faber Castell or 0.8 Le Pen

    Oil sticks Black, white and color(s) of choice Sennelier

    or Shiva

    Posca pens-medium tip black, white and  color(s) of choice.

    Caran d'Ache artist crayons (optional)

    1 China marker

    Artist vine Charcoal stick

    Paper towels or rags

    Glue stick

Deborah Velásquez, a Brooklyn original, lives the creative life in the wooded hills of New England with her husband and two boys. She is an award-winning artist, designer and the author of Drawing in Black and White. She loves the mix of design, words, art, and craft. Her work is modern, sophisticated, graphic, and bold and reflects her love nature and the simplicity of line. She makes art digitally as well as using traditional methods, including gouache, watercolor, and printmaking. 

 

Deborah is a graduate of the Colorado Institute of Art and the University of Hartford Entrepreneurial Business program.

She has studied textiles and fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, where she received her Millinery Certification, studying under hat legend Ann Albrizio. Her original artworks have been exhibited in numerous galleries and juried shows, and she teaches workshops in her Connecticut studio. A career highlight was when she was invited by The Smithsonian in Washington to speak and facilitate a workshop from her published book.

 

Her designs can be found on products such as rugs, wall art, ceramics, stationery, textiles, and mobiles, and her hats were featured at New York’s Henri Bendel. She has been featured in UPPERCASE magazine, Latina Magazine, Redbook Magazine, HGTV magazine, Target Stores, Domino Magazine online and is carried by Minted, West Elm, Habitat UK, CarpetVista of Sweden, Bed Bath and Beyond, Wayfair, Walmart and giftware and home décor licensing companies.
