Border Encased SCAPES-A mixed media collage experience

Workshop | Available

Welcome to the world of mixed media on “steroids” ! This workshop is taught by Irene Zytka, a self-taught local artist who uses recycled materials, acrylics, watercolors among many other things to create a truly unique  type of “landscape”. Students will start by creating their own collage papers using glazing and mark making techniques.  We will incorporate these collage papers along with book pages, publications and scrapbook papers to create a large piece of collage that will be used for our inspiration and border for our larger painting. Come join us for a fun and often times messy artistic experience !

  • Bio:

After 35 years in education, I’ve discovered my love for abstract art especially mixed media.  Opportunities arose to study visually with artists from Australia , Sweden England, Germany and Canada along with a week long intensive art retreat in Spain..  I love the mixture of collage and paint and am conscious to use recycled materials whenever possible in my artwork.  My work not only reflects the sign of the times but hopefully will offer the person viewing their own interpretation of what they see. In a first time appearance , I was honored to place second for best in show at the West Hartford Art League Arts show in 2022.
  • Recommended:

Acrylic paints- white, black, brown, blue, red and yellow plus others that you are drawn to. Small amounts and students grade are fine.

    Watercolor set- inexpensive set

Different size brushes and shapes- at least one angled brush

Acrylic Matt medium - I use Liquitex but can also get Americana. You will need at least 8oz. We will use a lot.

Publications: old magazines , book papers, any other scrapes or material.

Napkins: bring a couple with designs you like.and are willing to share. Any botanicals work well here.

Spray bottle, recycled cotton rags (or paper towels), make-up sponge, any stencils that you like (i will also have some that you can try), an apron to protect your clothes.

Metal Palette knife to move paint and apply medium. Can also bring an old credit card to do this. Marking making tools: Be creative here. Anything that you can dip in paint and makes an interesting mark can work. I’ve used bottle tops, bubble wrap, edge of credit cards etc…

Stabilo pencil (black). Can get other colors as well if you want.

White and black gel pens. My favorite is Uni-ball Signo.

An inspirational piece to guide your work.  This can be a printed out photograph you took, or a piece from a magazine. Think about interesting doors, windows, buildings, staircases, alleyways etc.

    Suggested:

Plastic gloves to protect your hands. I usually don’t wear them but always use a hand cream first to protect . Invisible Care is what I use.  Can find it at any art store.

Acrylic Inks - I use Daler-Rowney or Liquitex in any color you like.  I will bring some for you to try as well.

Brayer -  I will have mine but this is a handy tool for moving paint around. Additional gel pen colors: gold, silver ,red, green
