Abstract Collage Artworks using Gelli Plate Prints

Workshop | Available

In this workshop we will explore the world of Gelli plate printing to create
unique works of art. What is a Gelli plate? It is a soft, reusable, flexible printing plate used for
creating unique mono and mixed media prints.

On Day one, we will use the Gelli plate to create various designs and
textures. We will explore using found objects, botanicals, stencils and
create our own stamps and masks on a variety of papers.

On Day Two we will use those papers to create artwork that has texture,
uniqueness and interest on a variety of substrates. At the end of this two
day workshop, participants not only will have unique papers and artwork
but also a “bonus” project as well.

  • Gelli plate- 8x10 size is ideal . You can purchase this on Amazon, Jerry’s
    or Michael's
    • Brayer-This is essential for spreading paint on the plate. 3 or 4in. is
    good.
    • Acrylic paints-Basic colors are fine. I have used regular, heavy body,
inks even craft paints on the plate. I will bring other paints and inks for
    us to try.
    • Paper- Be creative ! I’m a big proponent of recycling so think about
those bills and advertisements that come in the mail , even if they have
printing on them. I primarily use those along with copy paper, tissue
paper, brown wrapping paper etc. Again I will bring some different types
of papers for us to try.
    • Flat bottom jar or baron- I use both and my hands as well. This is to
smooth down the paper on the plate.
    • Found objects- anything that can make an impression or interesting
    marks! Nothing too sharp though....
    • Palette knife- a metal one is recommended. Look for 10-12 size.
    • Matte medium- we will use this to adhere our papers to the substrate
and to create unique textures on the plate. I recommend Liquidtex .
    • Botanicals- Since its winter time, we will need to look in our homes to
see which plants need a trim! Botanicals create beautiful textures on the
    plate.
    • Stencils/stamps- If you have them, bring them. I have many that I will
bring and we will be creating our own as well.
    • Gloves- Optional item. We will get a bit messy!
    • Old Magazines - if you hav them, bring them...we will experiment with
using them to Crete image transfers.
    Irene Zytka

After 35 years in education, I’ve discovered my love for abstract art especially mixed media.  Opportunities arose to study visually with artists from Australia , Sweden England, Germany and Canada .  I love the mixture of collage and paint and am conscious to use recycled materials whenever possible in my artwork.  My work not only reflects the sign of the times but hopefully will offer the person viewing their own interpretation of what they see.

In a first time appearance , I was honored to place second for best in show at the West Hartford Art League Arts show in 2022.
