This workshop will explore various aspects of flower painting including watercolor techniques, composition and color. A wet in wet technique will be introduced. This method uses a plastic core board to slow drying time. It may be purchased from the instructor for $4. Some suggestions for additional tubes of color will be sent to students who register. Though open to all levels, some prior experience with watercolor is required.

  • Please bring all watercolor supplies that you own. Be sure to have a variety of brushes, watercolor paper, a palette, a fine point Sharpie and a roll of paper towels. Required are at least three good quality primary colors, plus black, either neutral tint or panes grey, and white watercolor gouache, DaVinci or Windsor Newton are fine. For the first class cut 5, 9x12inch sheets of watercolor paper. If you need more suggestions or have questions you may contact the instructor at 860 -233-2023.
  • If flower painting is of special interest these colors are suggested. Brands to get are either Daniel Smith, Graham, Holbein, Lukas or Windsor Newton. Azo Yellow or Aureolin, New Gamboge or Nova Gamboge, Quinacidone Gold, Sap Green, May Green or Permanent Green Light, Permanent Rose, Opera, Carmine, Vertiver Blue, Permanent Orange or Perlene Orange, Cobalt Violet or Mauve. These are not required for flower painting as secondary colors can be achieved by mixing primary colors. That being said, having certain tube colors can give added brilliance to your painting. If you want just a few additional colors my first picks would be New Gamboge, Permanent Rose and Cobalt Violet.

A teacher at the West Hartford Art League for more than three decades artist Carol Ganick teaches traditional and non-traditional approaches to watercolor painting, with special interest in building technique skills with beginning and intermediate level students. Though clearly having a passion for watercolor, she works in various medium including oils, acrylic, mixed media and collage.
