This class is intended both for beginners wanting to learn the basics of portraiture and experienced artists looking for fresh approaches to drawing the face, as well as help with problem-solving. Topics covered will include the basic proportions of the face, drawing the face from different angles, value structure in a portrait, and refining the portrait. Emphasis is on individual attention.

Using reference photos as a basis for class drawings, the class will include optional exercises, demos, and varied examples of master drawings. We will work primarily with graphite (pencil), with the opportunity to experiment in other media as well.

  • Bring a couple of pencils on the first day (2B and 4B or whatever you already have on hand) and a medium-size drawing pad (such as Strathmore “Drawing”). Other materials will be discussed in class.
