Explore, experience and enjoy this fascinating art form in your own way and at your own pace. In this class, you’ll explore a variety of collage techniques and materials that will challenge you and foster growth no matter what your artistic level.

Class will include:
- Weekly warm-up exercises/assignments that focus on experimental composition and building backgrounds.
- Weekly demonstrations of techniques or sources of inspiration.
- Regular critiques that cover the elements of good design and execution, and encourage innovation and creative growth.

The class will focus on the basics of paper collage but students will be encouraged to use a variety of media during the term. There is no materials fee, but a materials list will be available at registration. Beginner and experienced collagists welcome!   • Substrates:
  • I use a heavy illustration board to work on and mount to, but you can use any stiff material
  • such as masonite, mat board, heavy watercolor paper.
  • Cutting tools:
  • Scissors, various sizes
  • Knives, x acto for paper, utililty for heavier materials.
  • Cutting mat
  • Transfer techniques:
  • Polymer Medium
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Clear packing tape or laminating sheets.
  • Water tray, anything that can hold water and is large enough to submerge paper such as large tupperware or plastic containers, small sheet pans, photograhy trays etc.
  • Resist techniques:
  • Crayons, friskets, rubber cement, tapes
  • water based paints
  • Mounting and protecting:
  • Modge podge, matte or gloss gel medium or Yes paste
  • Modge podge spray or spray fixative
  • Wax paper
  • brushes
  • stiff bristle for spreading glue
  • Water jar to wash glue brushes
  • Paper towels
  • Coloring tools:
  • Whatever you have on hand and are comfortable using.
  • Water based is recommended, acrylic, water color and tempera.
  • Chalk pastels, colored pencils, crayons, markers.
  • Various tools:
  • Burnishers, brayers or other methods of applying pressure.
  • Textured papers, stamps, templates, masking tape, stencils.
  • Brushes for watercolor or acrylic various sizes.
  • We will be exploring a number of techniques so additional items will be neededas the class progresses. I will provide a list prior to the class demonstration. For the first class please bring an example of your work or work you like.
  • Also bring a number of sheets of white paper cut to 12 inches square.

Michael Toti has a BFA from the Swain School of Design, an MFA from Washington University in Saint Louis and is an adjunct professor of Graphic Design at Manchester Community College in Connecticut. He also teaches graphic design, packaging design, and typography through the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online.
