Students will explore abstract painting using oil or acrylic paint on Arches oil paper. Large painting knives will be used, also brushes and old credit cards. We will focus on color relationships. and composition paying close attention to balance and space. I found that painting on paper is a good way to approach Abstract Expressionism. Oil paper is one of my favorite surfaces to paint on.

  • Arches 12X16 12 sheet oil paper pad. around $18.
  • if you want to paint a larger size: 22X30 Jerry’s has a 3 pack for $15.90 - online
  • green frog tape
  • Large painting knife such as Painter’s Edge no 49T or 50T about $5.00 each
  • linseed oil if using oil
  • graphite pencils
  • oil pastels - if you have them
  • brushes
  • old credit cards
  • wedges and large color shapers - if you have them.
  • large piece of foam core to use as a support.- larger than your paper
  • OIl paint or Acrylic paint of your choice
  • white, primary colors, and any other colors of your choice.
  • paper towels
  • garbage bags
  • gloves
