Painting in the tonalist tradition allows for the artist to interpret the landscape into poetic imagery. Through in-class demonstrations, we will discuss techniques used to create dramatic landscapes. Landscapes will be painted in oils using photos, en plein air sketches and memory as references. This class is open to all levels seeking a creative alternative to traditional plein air painting methods and philosophies. Although oils will be the primary medium discussed in class, the use of other media is welcomed.

Paul Batch is a realist painter who recently completed his MFA at the Hartford Art School. Paul's award winning paintings have been exhibited nationally and can be seen in galleries throughout CT. Paul is a member of WHAL, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists and is an elected artist at the CT Academy of Fine Arts.

  • A canvas or panel, primed 11x14- 16x20ish
  • A reference to work from- this could be a photo, sketch or picture of a landscape that you would like to paint
  • A palette- I recommend Richeson Grey Matters Paper Palette
  • Odorless Mineral Spirits
  • Palette knives- a couple of sizes will be helpful as we will be painting with these
  • Brushes- You can never have to many brushes, I use all kinds, get a bunch of different sizes and make sure you have one that's at least an inch wide, I use a lot of house brushes that you can buy at a hardware store.
  • Below is a list of colors I recommend having. I also added which brands I use. There are many less expensive paints out there that are just fine to use. Windsor Newton Artist Grade paints are a good substitute for the more expensive brands.
  • Paints- Titanium White Flake White (or similar substitute ie Flake White Replacement by Gamblin) Naples Yellow Ochre Transparent Red Oxide Cadmium Orange Cadmium Yellow Light Phthalo Green Ultramarine Blue Mars Black
