In this 4 week course, learn how to use pastel effectively to make glorious marks and expressive paintings that describe the texture and the form of a subject. The focus will be on mixing and blending colors with pastel, each class starting with a short demo. We will work from life and photo references throughout the session. An in depth exploration of underpainting techniques will be included throughout.

  • A board to tape paper onto, approx 16x20. Foam core works well
  • artists tape
  • paper towels
  • an inexpensive flat 1” nylon brush
  • kneadable eraser
  • vine charcoal
  • paper: Canson Mi Tientes (unsanded) pastel paper. either large pieces to cut up or a pad in 9 x 12. In White, Sand, felt grey, flannel grey
  • Sanded paper like UART in about 400 grit. That comes in a cream color. Comes in a pad or large sheet which are located in the back drawers at Jerry’s in West Hartford
  • Pastels: Nu-Pastels come in a set. Buy them as single sticks in a red(light, medium and dark), a yellow(light, medium and dark) and Blue (light medium and dark). Then the cordovan, spruce blue and bottle green. The neutral colors like cocoa brown and sepia are great.
  • For a set, there is a student grade called Faber Castell. The largest set of 72 sticks is about 24.00 at Jerry’s. Or look online at https://www.dakotapastels.com or Jerry’s, Dick Blick, Amazon, Ebay.

Karen Israel has won numerous awards for her work in national juried exhibits. She is a Signature Member with the American Artists Professional League,Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and she has earned  Master Circle with the International Association of Pastel Societies. Karen is an artist member of the Salmagundi Club, NYC,The Copley Society, Boston and the Lyme Art Association.

Karen has been invited to participate in “Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais” honoring American Women pastelists and will take place in May, 2022. Karen had works included at Pastel en Dauphine in February, 2022. Karen’s work was featured in articles in Practique Des Arts: August 2020 Volume 53. and July 2018 Vol. 47 and in Southwest Art Magazine, June 2021.

She has served as juror for many national pastel exhibits and she is available for workshops and demos.
