Learn how to paint expressive abstract paintings using acrylic paint and other mediums. You will use external and/or internal references to tap your intuition while learning principles of composition, color and line. Use both traditional and household tools to build better and more interesting paintings. You will gain insights and a deeper understanding of your unique, creative perspective that will help you grow artistically. Mostly, you will learn how to loosen up and enjoy painting in a less judgmental and freeing way.

  • This class will take place online on Zoom. You will need a computer, ipad or smart phone with a camera and microphone to participate.
  • Mixed Media pad - any size or brand. At least 10 sheets. Preferably over 100lb.
  • Two wrapped canvas - any size you are comfortable with but recommend somewhere between 10x10 to 36x36 (rectangular is fine). If you prefer panel or paper, that is fine as well!
  • Acrylic paints - Recommend GOLDEN fluids. However, you can work with any brand of acrylic paints . Colors should include White, Black, one of each primary Yellow, Red, Blue (any hue you prefer) and at least one other color that you love (my favorite is Quin Azo Gold)
  • Any brushes but at least a 1” flat. Having various sizes allow you to experiment. It is also helpful to have a 1”, 2” and 3” foam brushes from the hardware store for the versatility especially for the start of paintings.
  • Fluid Matte Medium - GOLDEN brand recommended
  • Painters tape or yellow frog tape
  • Other (any or all of the following of my favorites):
  • Charcoal
  • Oil pastels
  • Pastel
  • Graphite
  • Jar of water
  • Paper towels or a rag for clean up
  • Palette
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Copy paper or some other inexpensive paper for lifting paint
  • Old credit or membership card that you no longer need OR a scraping tool such as a silicone bowl scraper.
