Get started painting! This class provides you with an introduction to color-mixing, getting to know your materials and tools, the language of painting:  composition, horizon line, chiaroscuro, values, cools and warms, light source, foreground, middleground and background – and how to develop your canvas.  We will break down the color wheel and get familiar with a different palette.  Classes begin drawing your composition, laying in color, learning cools and warms, and understanding how to develop a 2D canvas into a 3D image.  

This class partners well with the Beginning Painting: Fundamentals course.

  • *Students may work in Oil or Acrylic

    4 – 11” X 14” canvas boards or stretched canvases

    12 color set acrylic or oil paints

    If working in oil:  turpentine and linseed oil

    One sketch pad 9” X 12”

    One set of basic paint brushes – flat tip

    One set of basic paint brushes – round tip

Tesmer, Vicky

Celebrated American artist, Vicky Tesmer, is a practicing professional artist from Chicago. Her work can be seen in collections throughout America, Paris, Egypt and Germany. She is represented by Artfully Walls, Anthropologie and has exhibited throughout Chicago. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied in Versallies, France where she learned techniques of the Renaissance Masters and was classically trained.
