Add Life With People

Workshops | Available

Broaden your art skills and add interest to your paintings while enhancing the story you are telling! Learn many tips and techniques to include small figures to add life and movement into your painting. Workshop demonstrations will also include city and beach scenes. In this workshop, Nancy will teach how to compose and simplify figures by working with shapes, light, value, proportion and gesture in a few easy steps. Discover how you can paint people simply and effectively to enhance your landscape, and urban street scene paintings.

  • We'll break mid-day for lunch, so bring a bagged lunch or there are close cafe's to pick up food.

  • Reference Photos:  Your reference photos are very important! Have a bunch to choose from:
If you have an iPad or laptop, please bring with your photos uploaded. Painting using your phone is discouraged for way too small to see.
Also have printed (paper) photos off your computer. Print in high resolution with accurate color. I use the FedEx store to print out my photos since their color printer is much better than mine. We will probably be cropping elements from your photo, so please print it large enough so you can see details (at least 8 1/2 x 11).

Buildings/ Structures: houses, barns, buildings, etc.

Small Figures in a setting and also with street scenes: The figures can be out in a farmer's market, art fair, beach scene, walking down the street etc. Try to get figures with a light/medium/dark values on them (not backlit). Grab your phone and snap away!

Pro Tip: Best to include photos with strong contrast; a light side and shadow side (not backlit)

Have a strong focal area as well as a foreground, middle ground and background

Keep it simple but not boring!

Print out photos in high resolution and in color, at least 8 1/2 x 11.

Photos will print out darker so I edit the image to make it lighter before I print it.

Crop in your photo and look for a big dominant shape

The following is a suggested list. If you are already comfortable with the paints and supplies you already have, use those.

    Palette

    Panel transport box (optional)

    Palette knife

Sketchbook with pencil, kneaded eraser (pen to take notes)

Painting Medium (I like Gamblin Solvent-Free Oil Medium in the blue and white tube) but whatever is your preference

Paints  - This is my palette and only a suggestion (not required). Use colors that you are comfortable with

    Titanium white

    Cadmium yellow
