Portraits In Watercolor

Workshops | Available

Working from photos, learn to paint portraits in watercolor. Tony will lecture and demo each day and then work with students individually. Students will have the opportunity to work from either supplied photos or their own during the workshop. Tony will discuss materials, processes and conduct a demo in grayscale and in color utilizing the wet-on-dry method. He’ll paint and show additional tips and tricks. Students will work on their own versions, refining their work, with a critique on the final day.

  • This workshop is designed for the painter who has command of the watercolor medium and a basic comfort level with drawing is required.

    • #8 and 14 round and 1” flat brushes for most of the painting. Smaller detail brushes are fine also.
    • Pigments you will need: A warm and cool Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Cad Red Light (Scarlet Lake/Winsor Redis also fine), Sepia, Ultramarine Blue, Imperial or Dioxazine Purple, Payne’s Grey
    • Cold Press (preferred) watercolor paper, 140lb. ¼ or ½ sheet. The blocks are good, too. 11 x 14 should be the minimum size. Arches, Fabriano, Saunders, etc. Try to use a professional grade, not a student grade like Canson or Strathmore.
