Portrait Drawing: Understanding Heads & Faces
Youth Workshops | Available
Students will dive in to drawing the portrait, utilizing the versatile medium of charcoal and making dynamic, crucial observations from a live model. The universal concepts in this workshop aren’t only for students interested in drawing, portraits, or both, but make it open and applicable to *any* student who needs a better understanding of heads and faces in general. Students will delve into the structure of the skull to better understand the underlying structures beneath our facial features, and charcoal—messy, fast, powdery, dark, and rich—aids in both recording broad shapes and refining delicate details. Unlike working from a photograph, working from a model helps students explore ideas such as volume, mass, lines, edges, and values so that their portraits look more lifelike. The workshop begins with a few loose, quick exercises before focusing on a more polished drawing that students can leave as finished, or build upon later.
