Floral Watercolor From Photos

Workshops | Available

This one-day workshop will walk you through the steps of using a cell phone photo to create a unique watercolor painting. We’ll explore composition & identify a good photo to use for a painting, learn how to edit & enhance a photo on your phone, then develop a sketch for your painting. Students will learn how to use drawing gum to retain white space & create sharp lines, as well as painting & color mixing techniques to create values, light, shadow, contrast, texture, and dimension. Painting demonstrations will be provided, and there will be one-on-one time for assistance, questions, and feedback if desired.

  • Michelle will provide photos taken from local gardens for you to work from to create your finished piece. Michelle will have a few watercolor paintings from her photos on hand as examples of this process.

Please bring a bag lunch from home for a 30 minute lunch break we'll take mid-day. There are picnic tables in the park. You may also pick up a take out meal from a cafe/restaurant on nearby 5th Ave.

  • Paint:
Professional grade paint tubes in the following colors. Please note that professional quality, rather than student quality, tube paint vs watercolor pans or cakes is preferred for a stronger finished piece.
I use M Graham and Winsor Newton, and I also like Schmincke Aquarell.

    Phthalocyanine blue

    Helio cerulean or cerulean blue

    Winsor Newton violet

    Mineral Violet

    Quinacridone red rose deep

    Scarlet pyrrol

    Alizarin crimson

    Gamboge

Bismuth yellow (or a light yellow)

    Winsor Newton hookers green

    Permanent green pale

    Sap green

    Brushes:

Short round sizes, 2,4,6,8,10 (I use Escoda Barroco synthetic brushes from Blicks)
    Large mop brush ¾-1 inch

2-3 small old brushes that still have a good point for the drawing gum

    Misc:

Palette for paints and color mixing

    Small cups for water

    Rubber cement eraser

    Kneadable eraser

    2h pencil

Scrap watercolor paper for testing colors

    Paper towels or rags

Extra watercolor paper if desired (I use Arches)

Blicks and Jerry’s Artarama are good online sources for art supplies. Misc items can also be found at Hobby Lobby and sometimes Michaels.

$10 supply fee due to the instructor for the following materials:

Arches 300 lb watercolor paper for your finished 8 x 10 piece

    Tracing paper

    Graphite paper

    White water color paint

    Pebeo Drawing Gum/masking fluid

Source photos from Naples Botanical Gardens

Rocheleau, Michelle
Michelle Rocheleau

A resident of Naples, Florida, Michelle Rocheleau is a life-long artist. After completing comprehensive studio art programs at Algonquin College and Rivier University that included drawing, painting, sculpture, print-making, ceramics, and fiber arts, Michelle has chosen watercolor painting as her current medium. She loves to explore light and shadow and working in bright, bold colors.

Greatly inspired by the beauty of the flora and fauna found locally. Michelle works to capture that beauty in order to discover and re-create the designs, patterns, colors and textures that are found. Her goal is to challenge herself and the viewer to look thoughtfully and to enjoy the intricacies, and beauty that our natural world offers.

Michelle is a member of the Florida Watercolor Society and the Art Council of Southwest Florida. Her work is on exhibit at the Coco Gallery in Naples, the Naples Institute of Fine Art, and Marco Island Center for the Arts.
