For painters who want to un-muddle their color and/or loosen up a tight technique, this class provides individual instruction and demonstration on the fundamentals of color, value, composition & technique. The class is unstructured in that student’s paint what they choose (except for the first exercise for newcomers) & at their own pace. The emphasis is on learning to see and mix color by consistent use of the primary and essential tool, the color wheel.

  • (Artist-Not Student) Grade 12 Colors (37 ml. tubes)
  • 1 Cool Yellow (Cadmium Yellow Pale or Lemon Yellow)
  • 1 Warm Yellow (Cadmium Yellow Medium or Light)
  • 1 Cadmium Orange
  • 1 Warm Red (Cadmium Red Light)
  • 1 Cool Red (Thalo Rose or Rose Madder) (Alizarin Crimson is NOT a substitute, ROSE substitutes only)
  • 1 Dioxazine Purple
  • 1 Cool Blue (Ultramarine Blue)
  • 1 Warm Blue (Thalo, Manganese,Turquoise, or Cerulean))
  • 1 Thalo Green or 1 Permanent Green Light
  • 1 Permalba White (150 ml. tube)

  • 1 Linseed Oil (for Medium: ¾ turpenoid ¼ linseed oil)
  • 1 (12” x 16”) Disposable Palette Pad
  • 1 Small Sketchpad, HB pencils, Eraser
  • 1 Roll Paper Towels (or old towel)
  • Required:
  • “Paint Naples And The Basics Of Color” text by instructor, Ann Sullivan, available at the first class ($30.00)----due at first class----check or cash----no credit cards
  • MOST IMPORTANT: Come to class with the 10 required colors, some bristle bright brushes, as well as palette knife, palette, a canvas & odorless thinner.

Ann Sullivan was born and reared in New York City where she taught Biology at Andrew Jackson High School after graduating from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Except for a few classes at Pratt Institute, while she was still in high school, Ann is a self taught artist who has drawn and painted since childhood. In the late 70’s she and her husband moved to Cape Cod where they raised their 4 children. She opened the Ann Sullivan Gallery in 1983 and has sold her work through other galleries as well from New York to North Carolina to Florida.

Today she and her husband reside in Naples, FL most of the year where she teaches oil painting. They return to the beloved Cape Cod home and the gallery for the summer months.

In addition to one-man shows, her work has been included in Museum Exhibitions and has won numerous awards in National and juried shows. In 2022, at the request of our Ambassador to Ireland, Claire Cronin, Ann's paintings will soon hang in the American Embassy in Dublin, Ireland. 

She has taught painting at the various Art Associations across the Cape as well as in Naples and her work has been widely published in regional and national publications, including American Artist magazine.
