Learn classic and new techniques on how to work directly from a model with watercolor to paint life-sized portraits that are full of life and spotlight the wonderfully delicate transparency that only watercolors can deliver. Discover the secrets of working with sheer color, step-by-step, to build the form, catch the likeness and bring out the best features of the model.

  • • 4 sheets Arches 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper.
  • • 1 Robert E. Wood watercolor palette.
  • • 1 each of the following brushes: 1” Flat Winsor & Newton, Series 995; Grumbacher Brislette Fan Brush, #6 (this is a long-handled oil/acrylic brush that works beautifully with wc); Loew Cornell American Painter Script Liner, Script 4050, #2; Isabey Original Siberian Blue Squirrel Quill Mop, Series 6234, any size (this Isabey brush is the best brush for watercolor and that quality is reflected in the price; a true substitute for this superior brush is hard to find—but if a cheaper substitute is preferred, try a Winsor & Newton, Series 101 Round in #6, #8, #10 or #12—larger is better for portrait.)
  • • 1 Tube each, 5 ml. Winsor & Newton Watercolor Paints: Winsor Red, Winsor Orange, Winsor Yellow, Winsor Green (BS), Winsor Blue (RS), Winsor Violet, Opera Rose, Burnt
  • Sienna, Raw Umber (Before first class, arrange them in the same order as listed here & empty each tube entirely into Robert E. Wood Palette and leave the palette lid off until time to come to class).
  • • 2 large plastic water containers.
  • • Paper towels.
  • Odds and Ends
  • • A note book and pencil for taking notes. Apron or smock. Carry-all bag for your supplies.

Kell, Genie BFA, MA

Genie’s Master of Arts degree from New York University and Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from John Herron Art Institute are complemented by undergraduate study at Yale and Columbia Universities and training at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Genie has lived and exhibited her art in Athens, Greece, and on the Aegean islands of Mykonos and Santorini, and, in Venice, Italy, while completing her master’s degree there.

In addition to classes and workshops in watercolor, mixed-media, composition, oil and acrylic painting, art appreciation and art history offered throughout the U.S., since 1998, Genie has offered immersion workshops in France, Italy, Greece, and Belize through her ART ADVENTURE WORKSHOPS. Genie’s upcoming workshop, Venice: The Veneto & the 2024 Biennale, is scheduled for that autumn and will include Venice in addition to excursions to Ravenna, Padua, Palladian palazzi and other historic sites along Italy’s east coast as well as in-depth study of the international, contemporary art featured in Venice’s renown biennial exhibition.

In all her classes and workshops, while Genie is introducing new ways of thinking about art, encouraging the use of new techniques, and serving as a conduit for art methods and information, her focus is on encouraging each artist to pursue and embrace the elements that ensure success as an artist.
