A Painting A Day 3/20
Workshops | This program has been canceled
Creating a small painting each day can increase your skills and speed your progress. Improve your color mixing and observational skills by learning to paint one-session oil paintings using the still life format. Students will learn to create interesting compositions and dynamic paintings using large flat shapes and careful brushwork. The importance of value, color harmony and drawing will be emphasized in a supportive and relaxed environment with plenty of individual encouragement. Instructor will demo and answer questions during the session. Previous experience with oils is helpful, but all levels are welcome. Bring your sense of humor and leave your inner critic at home.
- BRUSHES ARE IMPORTANT FOR THIS CLASS as direct application of paint to panel is a crucial aspect of this workshop. I recommend (at least two) Silver Bristlon brushes in sizes 2, 4, 6 & 8. These are flat SYNTHETIC brushes, with stiff but flexible bristles. They are not usually available in Art supply stores, but you may order them online from Jerry’s Artarama, Dick Blick, Art Supply Warehouse. All supplies are available from these sites.
- Panels/Canvases: I recommend that students bring one or two inexpensive canvas panels in 11 x 14 or 12 x 16, available at Michael’s (Artist’s Loft brand come in multi-packs) or online. Don’t by canvas panels at dollar discount stores. They are generally very absorbent and difficult to paint on.
- Oil Paint: Burnt Umber (for drawing), Cadmium Red or Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder, Ultramarine Blue, Windsor Blue or Thalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium and Cadmium Yellow Light or Cadmium Lemon Yellow and a tube of White.
- Bring support materials such as a disposable palette, paper towels, medium Gamsol solvent, and something to carry your paintings home. Unused pizza boxes work well.
- Also, bring a clip on light, extension cord, and a simple prop or two to paint. These can be as simple as pieces of fruit or vegetables such as onions, apples, lemons, limes, oranges, cups or mugs.
- Don’t fret if you forget anything! We always enough to share and make things work.
Mary Winn
I was born in Boston and raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts where I still live with my husband and two cats.
Always an artist, I began painting and drawing as a young child. My parents enrolled me in oil painting lessons at a local Art and Frame shop when I was 11 years old. I attended New England School of Art's 3 year program for advertising and design, and went on to work in the, the Printing Industry, the Restaurant industry and in Hospital Public Relations.
In 2005 inspired by Duane Keiser's Painting a Day blog, I started my own blog and began a quest to paint with a disciplined approach rather than when 'inspiration' struck in an effort to hone my painting skills and create a body of work. I found that the blogging world was a perfect support system which created incentive to challenge myself and also provided feedback and encouragement from artists and viewers alike. It also brought me into a world of other artists whose work inspires me every day and helped me develop a following from all over the globe.
I've studied with many accomplished painters some of whom include Peggi Kroll Roberts, Charles Sovek, Alfred 'Chip' Chadbourne, Colin Page, Lois Griffel, and Carol Marine.
I am a longtime member of 4th Floor Artists, Provincetown Art Association, Naples Art, and North River Arts Society . I winter in Naples, Florida where I teach at Naples Art.
I also teach classes at my Rockland, Massachusetts studio in both oils and watercolors. My paintings can be seen at The Art Boutique at Tin City in Naples, Florida, and at my studio, by appointment.
I paint because it's like breathing to me.
