The Cape School of Art in Provincetown introduced me to a way of seeing light and color in the tradition of The Impressionists. Painting outside, working first with block studies, still life, and then progress to a landscape, you will learn how to closely observe color notes and color relationships that define the "light key” of the moment. The training of your eyes to see this way will reward you with more a brilliant, exciting painting. I encourage the use of palette knife to avoid “drawing.” Paint can be applied freely and more dramatically to keep your color pure and vibrant.

  • Oil or Water Mixable Oil
  • Large Titanium White
  • Cadmium Yellow light
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Cadmium Red Light or Windsor Red
  • Permanent Rose
  • Magenta
  • French UltraMarine Blue
  • Manganese Blue or Sevres Blue (Rembrandt)
  • Phylo Green Yellow
  • Yellow Orche
  • Other colors at your discretion
  • Plein Air easel set up
  • Palette Knife- -diamond shape (I recommend Loew Cornell J-15 or smaller, Holbein MX3 from artxpress)
  • Gesso Board (4 total) 9x12, 11x14
  • Blue pastel pencil
  • I recommend a view finder
  • Paper towels

The color and light that is emphasized in the Cape School teachings has both excited me and inspired me. I paint mostly Plein-Air. My goal is to capture the light key and atmosphere of the moment, to see the essence of nature in both its simplicity and complexity. My goal is to interpret, and through the use of color, create an illusion that expresses the light around us.
