Painting from life is the best way to learn to “see” color, value, and shape, but it’s not always possible. Subjects which move, such as boats and animals, plus vacation photos from distant locations are all subjects that need to be painted from photographs. Learn why photos do not contain enough information to make an accurate painting and explore ways to make well-designed paintings from photos. I will do a quick demonstration from my photo during the morning and students will then work from the same photo. Students should bring 1 or 2 printed photos to work from during the afternoon. Student may also work from an iPad or cell phone photos, but please keep the subject simple.

  • This workshop is open to all students who have previously taken my A Painting A Day workshop.
  • Students must have INTERMEDIATE LEVEL skills for mixing paint.
  • I recommend using canvas boards available through all art suppliers. They should be proportionate to the photo you are using, such as a square canvas (8x8, 10x10, 12x12) for a square image and a rectangular canvas (8x10, 9x12, 11x14) for a rectangular image.

Winn, Mary

I was born in Boston and raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts where I still live with my husband and two cats. Always an artist, I began painting and drawing as a young child. My parents enrolled me in oil painting lessons at a local Art and Frame shop when I was 11 years old. I attended New England School of Art's 3 year program for advertising and design, and went on to work in the, the Printing Industry, the Restaurant industry and in Hospital Public Relations. In 2005 inspired by Duane Keiser's Painting a Day blog, I started my own blog and began a quest to paint with a disciplined approach rather than when 'inspiration' struck in an effort to hone my painting skills and create a body of work. I found that the blogging world was a perfect support system which created incentive to challenge myself and also provided feedback and encouragement from artists and viewers alike. It also brought me into a world of other artists whose work inspires me every day and helped me develop a following from all over the globe. I've studied with many accomplished painters some of whom include Peggi Kroll Roberts, Charles Sovek, Alfred 'Chip' Chadbourne, Colin Page, Lois Griffel, and Carol Marine. I am a longtime member of 4th Floor Artists, Provincetown Art Association, Naples Art, and North River Arts Society . I winter in Naples, Florida where I teach at Naples Art. I also teach classes at my Rockland, Massachusetts studio in both oils and watercolors. My paintings can be seen at The Art Boutique at Tin City in Naples, Florida, and at my studio, by appointment. I paint because it's like breathing to me.
