Pastel is one of the most versatile of all painting mediums and allows for many corrections and layers to build up to beautiful paintings. One of the most important elements of a painting is its composition, which also requires a basic understanding of perspective. We will focus on these elements of landscape paintings, including those with buildings and street scenes. Students will do one or two paintings from their own photographs of a building, street scene or landscape, and they will learn how to overcome the color and compositional limitations of their photos. There will be plenty of personal attention given to each student.

  • Soft pastels only -- not oil pastels!
  • There are many kinds of papers and pastels available. For best results in this workshop, I have suggested the following combination. The wet-dry sandpaper is the painting surface and Nupastels are very easy to
  • work with on this paper and are especially useful for the exercises we will do and for learning the different kinds of strokes. The sandpaper is readily available at hardware and auto parts stores, and Nupastels at local art supply stores and by mail-order at: Dakota Art Pastels www.dakotapastels.com, Dick Blick www.dickblick.com and others. If you already have other papers and pastels, please bring
  • those as well.
  • PAPER 1. Please bring 3 sheets of black or charcoal gray WET-DRY SANDPAPER (9”x11”, 320 to 600 grit - BUY AT A HARDWARE OR AUTO PARTS STORE). This will be our painting paper for the exercises and can also be used for the landscape painting you will do.
  • 2. Optional, if you wish: 1 small sheet of any of the following: Uart; Art Spectrum Colourfix; Canson Mi-Teintes Touch sanded paper/board, or other sanded paper.
  • NOT: Canson Mi-Teintes regular pastel paper or velour papers! They are more difficult to use for beginners and don‘t work with Nupastels. Do not bring papers sold in pads and designated for a variety of mediums such as charcoal, pencil, watercolor, etc.
  • PASTELS 1. A SMALL SET OF NUPASTELS (12 OR 24 STICKS).
  • Optional, if you wish: individual Nupastel sticks as follows: #305 Spruce Blue, #295, Prussian Blue, #244 Blue Violet, #247 Light Naples Yellow, #298 Bottle Green, #353 Cordovan, #236 Carmine and/or #346 Burgundy. Individual sticks can be mail-ordered or
  • purchased at some art supply stores.
  • 2. Optional, if you wish: a small set or half-stick set of SENNELIER, SCHMINCKE or other very soft pastels, or UNISON or REMBRANDT-- considered medium soft.
  • Do not buy individual sticks of black or white as we will not use them. Bring whatever feels appropriate to your budget. Pastel sticks may seem expensive but they last a long time! On the wet-dry sandpaper, you can do an entire painting with Nupastels, but the softer pastels listed here will add richness and beautiful color to your paintings.
  • DRAWING Gatorboard, Masonite or other smooth, durable-surface drawing board from art supply store or lumberyard. apx. 16x20 or larger. Also bring a few sheets of newsprint to pad the board; masking tape, and/or 3 or 4 Bulldog clips (3”); 3-4 sheets of tracing paper or
  • blank newsprint to protect your work when transporting it home.
  • OTHER Small sketchbook, pen/pencil, paper towels, Single edge razor blade. Stiff inexpensive paintbrush or foam brush, ½ - 1 ½ inches wide, and a small plastic deli container.
  • Small color wheel.
  • Camera-optional.
  • PHOTOS We will do a landscape painting from a photo. I will have additional photos, but please bring a couple of favorite photos of a simple landscape scene (preferably your own and preferably printed, not on a screen).
  • * I do not use fixative as it darkens the colors and is not needed on the sanded paper. If you insist on using fixative, it MUST be used outdoors only, as most fixatives are very toxic.
  • Please feel free to email me if you have questions about the class or about supplies: splacesfe05@aol.com
Place, Sandra

Sandra Place was born & raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She developed an interest in drawing as a small child and drew mostly children and horses at the time. Although her activities were not geared towards an artistic pursuit, as an only child she had many opportunities for solitary explorations of the nearby natural world. This was the beginning of a connection to nature & the intrigue of following her own path, which has deepened with time. Early travels to Florida, the Gulf Coast and Europe, where her mother was born and grew up, planted the seeds of a life-long interest in travel & other landscapes, cultures & languages. In college, she found that the art courses were not geared to her way of seeing & wanting to paint, so she followed a more traditional path receiving a B.A. in French from Northwestern University. This led to a year in Europe with further studies in French and German, and then to a career in the travel industry in Chicago. Her work opened a new door to visit exotic lands & discover the richness of other cultures. As she photographed the people & their surroundings in these places, her eye for composition began to develop; these travels fueled her later interest in painting people of other cultures. In 1976, Sandra decided to pursue her original desire of becoming an artist & studied full-time for two years at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. After then spending several years in Boulder, Colorado, where she focused on painting children's portraits, she moved to Santa Fe in 1984, drawn by the physical & spiritual beauty of the environment, the clarity of the high desert light & the diversity of the cultures. She continues to enjoy travelling & painting the beautiful and colorful people of ancient cultures as they interact with their environments.
