A class designed for students of Intermediate level using acrylic paints on big canvas. You can work from photos, a still life set up, ideas of personal objects or pics off internet. I will concentrate on figurative painting, but you don’t have too. You will work to accomplish your own goals as you learn good composition, color, principles of design and brushwork techniques. There will be a short introduction discussion prior to starting on your painting adventure.

  • This class is VIRTUAL. Students will be emailed a link to join the class live prior to its start.
  • Easel
  • Acrylic painting medium you wish to use for this class or even experimental materials.
  • Paint colors – these are suggestions. If you have other favorite colors, that’s fine.
  • White
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Cadmium Red Medium or Grumbacher Red
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Pthalo Blue
  • Sap Green
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Brushes:
  • An assortment of rounds and flats. You can also find nice sets of brushes that come with a can-vas carrying case that are very economical. Look at what’s available at Hobby Lobby, Blick and Michael’s to find good deals on brushes.
  • Sponge- charcoal for sketching images on canvas
  • Container for water if you are using acrylic paint.
  • Paint medium – glazing medium for acrylics
  • Paper towels or rag
  • Brush cleaner- like a jar of water
  • Reynolds freezer paper (very, very good).
  • A small sketchbook or notebook is nice to make notes and sketches.
  • Canvas: 36x48 canvas is good or you can work on any size you want to use.

For a number of years, Shelly has turned her focus to painting where she primarily paints figurative pieces on a large scale in various water, western and natural environments. Shelly’s work has been showcased at SOHO, ArtPoole Gallery, ArtLofts, Big House Gallery, Teal Gallery, The Atlanta Athletic Club, Spruill Art Center, The Vinoy, Clearwater Library, Suntan Center, BoTiki, Lana Rose Gallery, Christos, and various exhibitions throughout Atlanta and St Petersburg. “If a painting doesn’t make you smile, you’re looking at the wrong one.” Shelly was an Adjunct Professor at The Creative Circus in Atlanta and The Maryland Institute of Art. Presently Shelly has relocated to St. Petersburg where she paints her joy. Shelly studied Studio Art workshops at Rhode Island School of Design and Spruill Art Center. Shelly is a graduate of New York University-College of Business & Public Administration.
